Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the class I need to apply for my License To Carry (LTC)?

Yes it is*

“In accordance with MGL Ch. 140, Sec. 131P (a) all first time firearm license applicants must successfully complete a MA Certified Firearms Safety Course”

*There are some cities and towns that may require a “live fire” component as well. This class does not fulfill that requirement.

Is my deposit refundable?

Unfortunately the booking deposit is a non-refundable deposit, however if you find that you cannot make the reserved class you have up to 72 hours (3 days) to reschedule to another available date.

Can I reschedule my class?

YES YOU CAN!

We at Massachusetts LTC want to make it at easy as possible for you to take our class. While we do have a non-refund policy, we do everything we can to make sure you can take our class in your busy schedule. With that said we you are able to reschedule your class anytime before 72 hours (3 days) of the class start.

What do I need to bring to class?

All you need is yourself and a good attitude! We provide the rest.

Your class is limited to 6 people, however I have a larger group would like to take the class together. Can we do this?

YES YOU CAN!

Currently the smaller class size is to make sure that the diverse people (non-acquainted individuals) taking the class get the time and attention that they require, while limiting the duration of the class to 4 hours or less. To accommodate larger class sizes such as yours we have made special concessions such as; length of class, time of day, day of week and of course class size through allowing private/group class booking.

When booking a private/group class that time frame doesn’t become an issue as you are all together taking the class a group with the understanding that the class may go longer than expected.

If you are interested in a private/group class you can contact us here and we can make the appropriate arrangements.

Can you recommend a first time firearm for me?

Every individual is different. We can make recommendations based on our experience and have a conversation with you about your firearm needs and requirements, however at the end of the day the final decision is up to you. It is always best to at minimum educate yourself on your use case:

  • Every Day Cary (EDC)
  • Home Protection (gun stays in the house and will not be carried)
  • Target Shooting
  • Hunting

Every Day Cary and Home Protection are by far the most common. While both are similar; they are not the same. During class we do cover things to consider when making these choices and we are available during and after class to further these discussions. Please feel free to ask.

Is there going to be live fire included with this class?

Some cities require “live fire” as part of your training to get your LTC; Boston being one of them. Unfortunately We do not offer that required class. We only offer the classroom portion, Basic Firearms Safety, that the majority of the cities require.

What do I do after taking your class?

After you complete the Basic Handgun Safety course you will receive your signed certificate of completion. This is the certificate that you will need to provide along with your LTC application to your local police department.

More information can be found here: https://www.mass.gov/info-details/gun-ownership-in-massachusetts

Will there be any tests during or at the end on class that I need to pass to get my certificate?

For the Massachusetts Basic Firearms Safety Class there is NO written test. However, certain cities will require you to take an additional “Live Fire” requirement to which Massachusetts LTC does not fulfill.

Throughout the class we will ‘pop quiz’ you to re-enforce the subject matter over and over.
(Participation is encouraged, but not required and has no bearing on you receiving your certificate at the end of class)

As of this writing some cities that are known to require the “Live Fire” component are:

Boston
Quincy
Sharon
Weymouth

It is always best to check with your local authorities for your specific requirements needed to fulfill.

I have never handled a gun before, can I still take the class?

Absolutely!

This class focusses on SAFETY amongst many other components of firearm ownership. This class is designed for especially for “first timers” like yourself. During the class you will not only learn how to correctly handle a firearm, but you will actually handle a firearm! While we do not have a live fire component to this class, we will still have you handle real firearms during the class to continuously emphasize the correct way to handle them in a safe consistent manner as well as how to load unload them.

(There will be NO LIVE ammunition present in the classroom)

Firearm ownership involves three key components:

Knowledge
Skill
Attitude

We focus and teach well known concepts on all three of these key points. We at Massachusetts LTC strongly encourage you seek additional training on the usage of the firearm that you chose to purchase once you obtain your LTC. Remember; Owning a firearm is a big responsibility; carrying one is even bigger. GET TRAINED!

If you need assistance to gain the additional training you need we will be more than happy to work with and answer any questions that you may have. Just ask!

Who certifies you to teach this course?

All Massachusetts LTC instructors at minimum have the following credentials:

  • National Rifle Association (NRA) Certified Home Firearm Safety Instructor
  • National Rifle Association NRA Certified Pistol Instructor
  • National Rifle Association NRA Certified Range Safety Officer
  • Massachusetts State Police Approved Firearms Instructors.

As instructors, competitors and Second Amendment supporters we are continuously taking training and certification classes as well as educating ourselves on our rights and the laws governing these rights as well as classes on being better instructors. We are always improving; and you should be too.
