Massachusetts Basic Firearms Safety Certificate Course

Training requirements:
In accordance with MGL Ch. 140, Sec. 131P (a) all first time firearm license applicants must successfully complete a MA Certified Firearms Safety Course or a Basic Hunter Education Course and submit a certificate of completion with their firearms license application.

Taking a firearms safety course is your best option if you are simply trying to fulfill the training requirement to apply for a Massachusetts firearms license. However, simply fulfilling these requirements shouldn’t be the end of your training. Massachusetts LTC always encourages LTC holders, especially new ones, to further their education and training on owning and handling a firearm. We are constantly updating our class offerings. Please inquire about further training when you come to class.

The following topics are covered in detail during class:

  • Firearm safety in the home and on the firing range
  • Understanding the basics of handling firearms, including parts, nomenclature, and operation
  • Identifying and loading/unloading of most common types of handguns
  • Fundamentals of marksmanship
  • Cleaning and basic maintenance
  • Child safety, locking devices, and storage containers
  • Massachusetts laws pertaining to the license application, firearms storage, and transportation

Massachusetts LTC consistently reinforces the three basic key items of firearm ownership and usage: Knowledge, Skills and Attitude throughout the class. The ability to handle a firearm safely is the key to good firearms ownership. You owe it to yourself, your family and the community to be a safe and responsible gun owner; we are here to help make you one.
